Meet Our Dedicated Team
Lorna van der Merwe
Optometrist
From a young age, Lorna van der Merwe was deeply fascinated by the complexities of the eyes. Her journey into the world of vision care began with an interest in Iridology, sparked by a story about a man who observed changes in an owl’s iris due to a broken leg. Unable to find Iridology in South Africa, she was led to optometry, a field that soon became her calling. The scientific and ophthalmic aspects, particularly the realm of optics, became the ultimate driving force for her career.
Since earning her B-Optom(RAU) from Rand Afrikaans University in 1992, Lorna has continued to expand her expertise. She has received accreditations for specialised lenses such as the Miyosmart lens from Hoya and MiSight daily contact lenses from Cooper as of July 2023, both focusing on Myopia control for children. To stay abreast of the latest advancements in vision care, she completes the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme annually.
Beyond her professional commitments, Lorna has a multifaceted range of interests. She is an advocate for alternative medicine and frequently questions traditional paradigms. She has enriched her knowledge base with additional courses, including Social Marketing from the University of Cape Town in 2018, Kinesiology and Brain Gym for Children in 1998, and technical analysis for stock markets.
The most rewarding aspect of Lorna’s work is the happiness and well-being of her patients. There is nothing more fulfilling for her than seeing a patient leave the practice with a smile, knowing she has provided a service that will positively impact the quality of their life.
Jackie Navarria
Practice Manager
Jackie Navarria bid farewell to the corporate world in December 2020 after a dedicated 23-year tenure as a Credit Controller at the same company. Her new chapter began on December 1, 2022, when she joined The View Optometrist, where she has been a client of Lorna van der Merwe since 1998.
Jackie is a proud mother to a son and a daughter, and she cherishes her role as a grandmother to three grandchildren. An avid competitor, Jackie has always been involved in swimming and running, occasionally stepping into coaching to guide young athletes, though not professionally. Her competitive spirit shone brightly as she represented the RSA Team at the Biathle World Champs five times, securing top-three finishes in her category four times. Her endurance and passion for sport are further evidenced by completing ten Comrades Marathons and participating in the Midmar Mile fifteen times.
Embracing the outdoors, Jackie enjoys gardening and taking her pooches for walks and runs. Indoors, she finds relaxation in the pages of a Wilbur Smith novel. Socially, she steps onto the dance floor, engaging in Ballroom and Latin dances, and enjoys the vibrant rhythms of the “Lang arm.”
Jackie brings a unique perspective and vibrant energy to The View Optometrists through her multifaceted interests and community involvement, contributing significantly to the practice’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. Her life’s journey reflects a commitment to excellence and a deep appreciation for the well-being of those around her.
